Yep, today 18 years ago Sonic was released on the Mega Drive. Just for one day let's forget about the iffy state the Sonic franchise is in right now and set our minds back to when the character first arrived on the scene. Dig out your Mega Drive if it isn't still set up and stick that cart in for a good session of rolling down hills, running around loops, bouncing around in a psychedelic world where fish transform into birds, and bopping robotic animals and egg shaped blokes on the head. If you don't still have a Mega Drive, you could always play it on your Saturn, PS2, Gamecube, X-Box, X-Box 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, iPhone..
(Just don't play the Game Boy Advance one.)
If you haven't seen it before, have a read of this article about a Sonic Birthday event I went to as a kid back in 1997.
While Sonic might not be having a big party this year (or at least one we know about), I'm sure he is most likely CUTTING THE CAKE as we speak.

Happy 18 Sonic! You're finally as old as you act! I plan on popping in the ol' "NOT FOR RESALE" Sonic 1 cart tonight.
(Let's also not forget that the President's secretary from SA2 turns 8 today) ;)
Or the GameCom one; man what the hell WAS that?
Just a small correction (since I'm an insufferable nerd like that) Sonic launched in North America and Europe first on June 23 then dropped a month later in Japan.
Anyway, I'm certainly glad Sonic's still kicking, happy birthday! I should do something to celebrate, like playing one of the original Genesis games or playing Sonic Adventure 2.
Arun: fixed that for ya. Great avatar too! :)
Stacy: That's Tiger electronics for you, I guess. I don't think they knew how to move on from LCD toys to an actual handheld.
Holy carp! The Game.Com! I totally forgot about that thing! Black and white Sonic Jam.
Wait a tick, could that be the only B&W Sonic game?
Thanks Gagaman(n):) This post actually inspired me to get up and get to work on my Sonic blog I kept putting off. Not much there now, but hopefully it'll build up soon.
Off topic, but I checked out your artwork. Great stuff. You cartoons are really expressive, and kind of have that wild, John Kricafalusi touch to them (admittedly, I'm not the biggest fan of John K. but I still respect him). I can't cut it as an animator, but I hope to be a skilled cartoonist/illustrator some day myself.
